Green building certifications have brought about a strong movement in sustainable building practices, from resourcing locally and responsibly to building better and smarter. However, these certifications only take building so far - the future, says Scot Horst, is in energy management.

Last week at Greenbuild, the USGBC and GBCI launched arc, a new for-profit technology venture that will track energy use and let users compare a building's performance with other like buildings by certification, region, and size.

GreenBiz reporter Elaine Hsiegh caught up with the incoming CEO of arc, Scot Horst, who was USGBC's chief product officer. Horst explains arc is a growth of the LEED Dynamic Plaque and hopes access to energy data will help businesses and property managers reduce their energy use and ultimately reduce their energy costs.
