An NAHB analysis of Census Data from the Quarterly Starts and Completions by Purpose Design survey reveals that 3Q 2016 custom home building starts set a post-recession high. In Eye on Housing , NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz takes a look at this analysis that shows the number of custom home starts during 3Q 2016 increased to 49,000 from 47,000 in 3Q 2015.
Dietz also reports on the current market share for custom homes in terms of single-family starts which currently sits at 22%, still down from the cycle high of 31.5%:
The market share for custom home building will likely experience ups and downs in the quarters ahead as the overall single-family construction market expands. Recent declines in market share are due to an acceleration in overall single-family construction.
