HousingWire staffer Brena Swanson reports that dwindling ranks and aging demographics among residential appraisers mirrors the broader issues of attracting new, young talent into the field.

Swanson notes that new technologies and the ability for appraisers to work remotely and work longer into their lives serve as temporary "band-aids." The big issue, like that of the building trades, is getting young adults to choose the skill as a job and career. Swanson writes:

“The industry as a whole has really struggled to have answers,” said Matthew Simmons, managing partner at Maxwell, Hendry & Simmons, a commercial and residential appraisal and consulting firm, on the issue. Simmons joined the industry back in 2003 and is a Millennial.
