As electric vehicles gain market demand, the next step is building car ports that can charge them. Swedish firm InnoVentum thinks it has the solution in Giraffe.

Giraffe is a hybrid wind and solar-powered EV charging car port, which was designed to combine aesthetics with material and space efficiency. Its name is symbolic of the end result, which has two shorter legs, a sloping back covered in solar panels, and two longer legs with an extended neck topped by a wind turbine.

The sloping of the solar panels is crucial in that it collects energy from the sun for longer periods - two hours earlier and two hours later than traditional PV mounting.

“The Giraffe 2.0 wind-solar power station is suitable for a variety of applications. It can charge a summer cottage, a house, provide hot water, light, power electronic equipment – either connected to the grid or in remote locations, e.g., replacing diesel generator (with a suitable battery backup). In [an] urban environment Giraffe 2.0 can function as a charging spot for electric vehicles, as a bus station (self-contained or utility-connected) or as an educational renewable energy installation.”
