Appearing on “The Tonight Show” Monday night, Sen. John McCain took the opportunity to remind viewers that while he served five years in a POW camp, he didn’t have a house. The comments were a response to his gaffe the preceding week when he couldn’t quickly recount how many homes he owned with his wife. It turns out the correct answer was seven. Leno made light of the situation by asking McCain, “for $1 million dollars,” how many houses he owned. McCain began by asking for a moment of seriousness, then said, “I spent five-and-a-half years in a prison cell. I didn't have a house. I didn't have a kitchen table. I didn't have a table. I didn't have a chair.” McCain went on to say that he was proud of his wife’s father, who came home from World War II and started what ultimately proved to be a very successful business.
