It seems that more home buyers these days prefer walkability to nice views, reports MarketWatch staffer Daniel Goldstein.

In the Bay Area, the homes in the Oakland hills just a decade ago commanded the biggest premiums, because of the spectacular views of the bay and of San Francisco. But now, buyers are overlooking the views to get the convenience of a walkable neighborhood like Rockridge or those with shops close by and accessible public transportation such as a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station.

“Views are still commanding a premium, but a home in the hills with no view will definitely sell for less than one in the flats of the same size,” said Scott Leverette, a Realot with McGuire Real Estate in Berkeley, Calif.
