Democratic Governor Kate Brown recently approved a new wage plan, which will raise the minimum wage in Portland to $14.75 an hour by 2022.
Wall Street Journal reporter Eric Morath writes Oregon is the 15th state to create a law that boosts minimum wage since 2014. While Oregon’s current minimum wage is $9.25 an hour, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. According to Economic Policy Institute (EPI), by 2022 eleven states will have minimum wage at or above $10 an hour.
“In contrast, 21 states follow the federal rate, and some of those—most recently Alabama—have acted to block cities and counties from setting their own rates.”
“I think people in other states will read about Oregon’s tiered minimum wage and wonder why their own legislatures haven’t adopted this approach,” said Third Way policy adviser Joon Suh.“State and federal lawmakers should be paying attention.”
