With California and Texas both experiencing serious droughts over the past several years, water conservation was a hard issue to ignore at the 2015 Solar Decathlon. We visited with team Texas/Germany and the University of California, Davis to hear about their use of rainwater and graywater systems.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2015 Solar Decathlon showcased innovations in engineering, architecture, and energy-efficient systems from 14 teams of students. Although many of the systems were custom-built for the projects, several teams incorporated materials and techniques that any builder can implement now.
The 2015 Solar Decathlon team from Stevens Institute of Technology wanted their project to address the issue of coastal flooding after their personal experiences with the devastation from Hurricane Sandy.
