Columbus, Ohio may become the first city in America to realize the potential of technology's benefits on transportation, thanks in part to the Department of Transportation's Smart City Challenge.

The US Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx named Columbus as the winner of the $50 million challenge, which asked mid-sized cities to formulate plans and proposals for how they'd use technology to improve the structural disparities in city transportation.

Columbus competed against 77 other cities for the $40 million grant from the government, plus the $10 million promised from Paul Allen's Vulcan. Columbus also raised $90 million from organizations and businesses itself to put towards these advancements.
