Many developers and builders are embracing energy efficiency and sustainability features in homes for buyers that want to go green. And it turns out the payoff is worth it, since buyers are willing to pay more for green homes. Redfin data scientists analyzed real estate listings for 2015 to find which ones used the most "green" words, and found that homes with green features sold for $33,894 more than the median sale price of all homes in the cities Redfin analyzed.

Villanova in Philadelphia topped the list with 57% green home listings. Residents of the Main Line area of the city are retrofitting their homes with energy efficient features.

“Most homes in the Main Line were built before 1965, which means they’re in need of upgrades,” said Blakely Minton, a Redfin real estate agent in Philadelphia. “Over the years homeowners in the area have replaced aging roofs, windows, plumbing, heating and cooling systems with newer, energy-efficient materials and designs. In renovated homes you’ll find ENERGY STAR® appliances in the laundry rooms and kitchens, high-end foam insulation in the walls, double-pane windows, energy-efficient tankless water systems and smart home technology that monitors light and heat use.”

Villanova was followed by Villages of Irvine (Irvine, Calif.), Downtown Santa Monica, Calif., Newton Centre (Newton, Mass.), Tremont (Cleveland), Terramor Village/Ladera Ranch (Orange County, Calif.), Belltown (Seattle), Kerrigan Ranch (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Downtown Dedham, Mass., and Del Sur (San Diego).
