Lennar's recent withdrawal from Tech Village Partners may be the nail in the coffin for the development of a 9,000-unit biotech village in western Palm Beach County, Fla. Lennar and Centex had formed the partnership with the intent to develop 4,750-acre Vavrus Ranch, a tract perched near the proposed home of Scripps Florida, a biomedical research organization. However, despite $800 million in government incentives to fuel Scripps' expansion, environmental groups' strong opposition has stalled construction and put the biotech village proposal on shaky ground. Centex plans to move forward with new plans for the land minus Lennar.
