The New American Home: Casual Comfort

Savvy architects and builders know where their bread is buttered: in the kitchen, especially in one that is connected none-too-subtly to a comfortable gathering area and to the outdoors.

BIG ISLAND: The centerpiece of the home's amply appointed kitchen is a massive, multilevel island that encompasses eating, food prep, and storage while serving every other part of the space with its surface area.

HARDY HEARTH: Flanked by tall bookshelves, the wide fireplace and precast stone surround and mantle break up the long wall of the garage behind it, offering family and friends a pleasant touch in the family room.

Retractable Glass Doors: The full-view, center-opening doors between the loggia and the family room slide completely into the sidewalls, creating a 16-foot-wide-by-10-foot-high opening. The impact-resistant, insulated glass is held in place by the heavy aluminum frame with concealed fasteners and commercial-grade, adjustable rollers.

Prudent Pantry: Lots of space doesn't mean you don't need to maximize the space you have, a lesson reaffirmed throughout the house but exemplified by the pull-out wire shelves of the pantry that extend its storage area threefold. Two sets of shelves (one on each side of the cabinet) make it easier to reach all the way to the back.

Savvy architects and builders know where their bread is buttered: in the kitchen, especially in one that is connected none-too-subtly to a comfortable gathering area and to the outdoors. This one doesn't disappoint on any score, offering a generous, L-shaped room, anchored by a massive, granite-topped island, that flows to a casual family room and through neat, sliding glass pocket patio doors to the loggia. Oh, and there's also a pair of terrace doors directly from the kitchen to the pool as an alternative route to the outside. Unlike the parlor, the family room features both the traditional hearth of a wide fireplace and the modern one of a flat-screen TV set in a cabinet along the stair wall. The room offers three escapes besides the patio doors to the loggia: one to the three-car garage; one to the motor court (in which a clever dog house and closet occupy the understair space); and one through a short passage past the elevator to the single-car garage/ workshop. And, for convenience, there's a full bath just around the corner that shares duties for the pool, loggia, family room, and guest suite.
