Nest recently announced a customized version of Thread, OpenThread, an open source-based code implementation of the technology that Nest has developed for its own products. MarketWatch staffer Ingrid Lunden explains how this innovation will open up the technology to other devices on the market, but only if they upgrade Thread.

Greg Hu, head of Nest Platform and Works with Nest, stressed the interoperability that will be provided by OpenThread:

Launching OpenThread gives Nest a shot at offering code and a potential platform for free (following a road taken by stablemate Android) as a way of bring in more hardware and software developers to build products that can work in a Nest-led ecosystem. Hu said that the intention was always to open source its efforts. “We wanted to make sure the tech was far enough along to be valuable for partners,” he said.
