The battle between local and cloud-based storage is tipping in favor of the almighty cloud. TechCrunch contributor Tom Goodwin takes a look at how devices have remained relatively simple while the smartness can be found in the cloud or the system that helps to operate the simpler hardware.

In order to understand the shifts in technology, Goodwin examines four phases of tech: analog expansion, digital convergence, digital optimization and systemic integration. Personal digital systems (Amazon Echo for instance) are one of the more recent advances that show how physical things don't all degrade as time passes:

Thanks to software, you can now wake up to a far more improved product than when you left it. This is a new way of thinking. These are products designed with software, hardware and partnerships together, by companies that now realize our experience of products is about access to a system, rather than the delight of each machine alone.
