Wall Street Journal's Eliot Brown reports that Sidewalk Labs, a subsidiary of Google's parent company, Alphabet, is putting the final touches on a proposal for developing large-scale districts containing housing, offices, and retail within existing cities.

Sidewalk Labs would scout for cities with large lots of land they would like to develop, and partner with those cities to build up districts heavily integrated with technology.

The aim is to create proving grounds for cities of the future, providing a demonstration area for ideas ranging from self-driving cars to more efficient infrastructure for electricity and water delivery, these people said.
