It’s no secret that open layouts are popular. But now, many new house plans are pushing beyond the standard open kitchen and family room configuration by pulling the dining room into this area, too. This merging makes sense—your costs will stay low, the living space will feel bigger, and buyers are likely to get more use out of the room. In fact, just over half (153 out of 273, or 56 percent) of the new designs added to Builder House Plans in the past six months have either no formal dining room or one that is merged with the breakfast nook. Dining rooms aren't relics yet (especially in luxury homes), but they're probably superfluous for today's families, especially given the ubiquity of kitchen island seating. These plans bring gathering spaces together beautifully. The layouts also display the kinds of great practical details that your buyers are less likely to find in existing houses, such as large mudrooms and ample closet space. Read more
