Known for its high-end shopping and star-studded ski slopes, Aspen is flush with many things. But affordable lodging isn’t one of them, and Limelight Lodge is one of the few venues in town for families on a budget. Beloved for its laid-back feel and nightly concerts, the venue hasn’t always been known for its convenience. Previously spread across two parcels on opposite sides of the street, the disjointed set-up was a hassle. So, the property across the street was sold, and a lodge adjacent to the main hotel purchased.

Inside, the new design offers a flexible area that encourages interaction. As a landmark of the local music scene since the 1960s, an area for nightly concerts was a must. To keep things friendly, the performance space was combined with the lobby as well as the bar and kitchen. As a result, when there’s something in the oven, the entire space fills with the enticing aroma.

Using brick for the exterior “was never debated,” says John Cottle, a principal at CCY Architects. Due to Aspen’s mining town heritage, “all major downtown buildings are either brick or sandstone … and the building needed to be a belong-to-Aspen building.” However, a translucent glass canopy and lift-and-slide doors lend touches of modernity. “We made sure it stayed a landmark and looked to the past,” says Cottle. “But it also had to look to the present and to the future.”
