Shoe Box

When architect Kevin Alter gutted this duplex and converted it into a two-level modernized single-family home, he needed a means of egress to the second story that would not disrupt the flow of light. His solution is an open-riser metal staircase with steel stringers, ipe treads, and a landing “box” for shoe storage. Glass railing panels under a sculptural handrail further permit the daylight that filters into the space through a large existing steel casement window.

Spanish Steps

The five small infill units that make up this pocket village in Santa Barbara respect the local tradition (not to mention stringent architectural guidelines) by  blending Spanish, Mediterranean, and Moorish influences. Each residence is thoughtfully oriented with its own unique entry and arrival sequence, with fine details such as wrought iron railings, stucco archways, and staircases inlaid with wood and tile.

Open Case

The original stairway in this spec home was pretty standard: carpeted treads and risers, turned wood spindles, and oak newel posts in a utilitarian spot off to the side in the plan. Its replacement is not so shy. Visible from the front door, the open structure is a sculptural element meant to be seen. A central tube steel stringer bolted to the existing slab cantilevers out at the landing and returns to a steel post hidden in the wall. Steel “C” channel treads were welded to that cantilevered support, wrapped in plywood, and then finished with solid mesquite treads to match the flooring. The last tread of the stair is a smooth-cut limestone landing.
