A recent poll for Trulia, conducted by the Harris Poll, found that only 32% of Americans would move into a home the same size as their current home if they were to move in a year. Trulia's Blog staffer Ralph McLaughlin uses the data from this poll to explain the home size preferences of Americans.
One noticeable trend is most of those living in the largest homes (greater than 2,000 ft.) would prefer to downsize rather than upsize if they were to move in a year:
For those currently living in homes sized 2,001 – 2,600 square feet, more than 6% more Americans would move into a smaller home compared to a larger home (52.1% vs. 49.1%). Of those currently living in homes sized 2,601 – 3,200 square feet, 35% more households would move into a smaller home than larger one (67.4% vs. 32.7%).
