A large pay gap exists among men and women, widening as careers progress.

MarketWatch staffer Catey Hill delves into an analysis that says a woman will lose out on $430,480 in wages over a 40-year career thanks to this gender pay gap, according to a new study from the National Women’s Law Center. Hill notes that in some states, and among select ethnic groups, the gap is even worse. She writes:

By state, women in Louisiana face the largest pay hit, at $671,840 total, and women in six other states — Michigan, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming — face gender-based pay hits of more than $500,000 over their lifetimes.
