THIS 1,684-SQUARE-FOOT, one-story, two-bedroom, single-family move-down is tucked among the other attached dwellings in this 10-acre desert development. The 88 units were built in 12 groupings of six and eight units, with garages arranged around a common motor court.

Each building responds to a grade change of 5 percent, says architect Robert Hidey. Plan 2 has a tiny courtyard off the kitchen, “a product of how the plans interlock and respond to the grade.” The home's exterior reflects an Old World vernacular: simple gabled roof lines, stucco walls, and ornate ironwork. The interior continues in the same vein: Arched doorways help define space and the circulation of rooms.
