THE MAKING OF ANY mixed-use community involves the usual hurdles of nervous neighbors, density requirements, and roadway access. At the 110-acre Progress Ridge, a massive quarry and a fragile creek habitat were added complications. MGH Associates turned these obstacles into assets by transforming the quarry into an 11-acre lake, creating a 20-acre park, and moving a major road to make the town center more visible. Extra-wide parkways and pedestrian-scale buildings help to create a sense of place that is compatible with adjacent neighborhoods.
