With the U.S. home building industry facing a deepening labor shortage and lack of trained workers, schools that teach the construction trade are becoming vitally important. Here, JLC contributor Sue Burnet takes a look at two of them.
One is a woman-only school in New York state that helps women to move into industry jobs or just develop the skills necessary to work on their own homes. The second one, in Vermont, offers construction trades schooling a focus on sustainable building practices. The school offers nearly 100 courses, on subjects including sustainable building design and construction, architectural woodworking, energy efficiency, building science, and working landscapes and ecosystems.
