Condo owners at Taylor Square Condominiums in Reynoldsburg, Ohio are seeking full coverage of damages from the condo’s builder, Casto Communities, after they discovered that interior-only faux-wooden trim had been used as exterior molding without any additional caulking or sealant. This material had allowed mold and mildew to develop behind many of the building’s windows, creating thousands of dollars in damage.Home improvement contractor Taylor Renovations [unrelated to Taylor Square] is fixing the problems and is Better Business Bureau accredited with an A+ rating. Workers say they found stickers on the back of the exterior trim reading, “for interior use only.”
“That’s just cardboard, that’s not wood,” [a] Taylor Renovations employee said. “That should never be on the outside of a house at all.”Casto Communities has offered Taylor Square’s owners a collective $7,500 settlement on the condition that all of them agree never to sue Casto or bring Casto any claims related to the issue. Current repair estimates are more than double this amount.
