IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE AVAILABILITY and pricing of general liability insurance, as most industry members are, you'll be interested in special pricing offered to companies that have taken steps to document their commitment to quality and focus on continual improvement by participating in the NAHB Research Center's National Housing Quality (NHQ) Program.
In July, HBW Insurance Services, a managing general agent with underwriting authority from several insurance companies to underwrite commercial general liability insurance for home builders, issued exciting news. During the past year and a half, HBW has become very familiar with NHQ Program requirements and the significant impact their implementation can have on the industry's technical quality. Accordingly, HBW is offering a discount on general liability insurance to builders who successfully implement the NHQ's quality assurance requirements and complete a certification audit. HBW is also offering discounts to builders who require all or a portion of their critical classes of trade contractors to implement the NHQ's Certified Trade Contractor program and successfully complete a certification audit.
The NHQ Program has introduced many of the concepts of the worldwide quality revolution to home building and remodeling. Activities include co-sponsorship of the National Housing Quality Award, the Certified Trade Contractor program, and a pilot Certified Builder program. Response among builders, trade contractors, and remodelers to the NHQ initiatives has been strong, and quality management procedures are becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the residential construction industry.
