If retired neurosurgeon and former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson officially accepts his reported appointment as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under the Trump administration, he would have “a key role” in shaping housing policy that could affect the market for years to come, according to Realtor.com’s Clare Trapasso.
Some housing experts believe that Carson’s appointment marks a “reprioritization” of the HUD under the new administration. “If [housing was at] the top of some policy agenda, I would think [Trump] would want to put someone in charge who has a real record in dealing with these issues,” says Rachel Meltzer, an urban policy professor at the New School in New York.
Carson’s campaign proposals and documents provide some hints about his views on housing policy, including his disdain for the HUD’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule and his potential support for the privatization of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Carson had also pledged to eliminate home mortgage interest deductions while he was running for office.
