Custom home trend lines, per the Census Bureaus Quarterly Starts and Completions by Purpose and Design for Q4 2015

Custom home projects, by the Census Bureau definition of them, are running at half the number of units they were during their heyday period of the mid-1990s on an absolute basis. As a share of the total of single-family homes, Custom Homes represent a little over one-in-five of the total, which is off the post-Recession cycle peak.

The market share for custom home building will likely experience ups and downs in the quarters ahead as the overall single-family construction market expands. Recent declines in market share are due to acceleration in overall single-family construction.
