Space in most cities is hard to come buy. Many Americans have to give up a little elbow room for a shorter commute to work or active social scenes. After finding 43% of Americans would like a larger home, Trulia put together the top cities with starter homes offering the most square footage.
It's no surprise that Texas and the South rule the list. Austin, Texas had the largest available starter homes with a median square foot of 1,428. Atlanta was close behind with 1,344 and Newark, New Jersey with 1,330. The suburban counties surrounding Philadelphia also had some extra space to offer those looking for starter homes with a median square foot of 1,326. Houston came in at No. 5 at 1,320 square foot.
However, Honolulu, Hawaii offers the biggest opportunity for trade-up buyers with homeowners moving out of starter homes into trade-up homes able secure 82% more space than they had in their starter homes. San Antonio and Houston, Texas both offer trade-up buyers 51% more space than their starter homes.
