It's been a year since CalAtlantic Group was formed via the merger of Ryland Homes and Standard Pacific. Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Alan Heavens caught up with the builder's Philadelphia regional president, Chris Gillen, who says the merger has opened up a ton of growth opportunity.

For the Philadelphia area, Gillen says CalAtlantic is the third largest in market share and that the business continues to seek out opportunities in the local suburbs. Most of what the fourth-largest builder is building are more boutique-style developments under 25 lots, according to Gillen, with the exception of a 113-unit townhouse community in Media, Pa. where prices start at $400,000.

"We look for bigger opportunities, but they must be closer to the community," said Gillen, who lives in Montgomery County outside Ambler and expressed enthusiasm for the revitalization of that town, Media and other Pennsylvania boroughs.

Marshallton Walk is an easy walk to the Marshallton Village Historic District, and thus to the Marshallton Inn and the Four Dogs Cafe.

It is one of the developments that "sets us apart from the competition," Gillen said, because of its emphasis on design and location.
