At last month's International Builders' Show, the NAHB Research Center announced the rollout of its new Oriented Strand Board (OSB) Product Certification Program. An extension of the Research Center's existing building product testing and certification services, this installment is another step toward fulfilling the Research Center's mission of improving the quality, durability, affordability, and performance of residential construction.
The program is customized to meet the particular needs of the OSB manufacturing industry and is based on ISO 9000 principles to provide a rigorous and complete review of participating companies' business practices and quality assurance systems. Certified products are tested to ensure that they meet or exceed nationally recognized standards and to optimize performance, reduce failures, and improve quality. With prominent manufacturers such as Weyerhaeuser now participating, the Research Center is optimistic that this latest program will achieve the same level of success as its ongoing certification programs for plumbing and insulation manufacturers.
The Research Center's full-service materials and structural systems laboratory is accredited by the International Accreditation Service, and plans for a major expansion are under way. Robert Hill, director of laboratory and certification services, says manufacturers will benefit from the group's unique approach and knowledge of the industry. “Continuous improvement is at the core of all Research Center certification programs,” he says. “Our approach blends our extensive industry expertise with the only certification program in the marketplace based on ISO 9000 principles.”
With more than 40 years of testing and certification experience to back it up, the Research Center Certified mark is recognized and trusted by builders, code officials, and consumers.
