Built on the site of a former mobile-home park, this ultra hip (not to mention green) 22-unit enclave sandwiches two clusters of 11 units around a central path that leads to a common parking lot. “It was an efficient use of the site, and we didn’t have to build a road,” says developer Randi Dorman.

Featuring dramatic 10-foot-high ceilings, concrete floors, and vast expanses of glass, each 1,800-square-foot detached home has a private yard and a balcony off the second-floor master suite. In summer, the balconies provide shade for the living areas below.

Exteriors clad with horizontal fiber-cement siding and steel with vertical standing seams are complemented by galvanized metal rainwater harvesting tanks that come standard with each home. Every unit is pre-wired and plumbed for solar power.

No doubt a cool addition to the desert landscape, this project’s simple, striking aesthetic carries through to even the smallest details such as the custom steel house numbers, which garnered a special focus award from the judges.
