By BUILDER Magazine Staff Consolidation is happening in products as well. For instance, ADT's new Safewatch iCenter is a new twist on the security keypad: It lets the homeowner arm and disarm the security system with one touch and control the garage door opener, lighting, and other small appliances. But it also serves as a family message center; monitors the home for dangerous conditions like CO2, fire, and flooding; and can even connect to a customized home page on the Internet.
iCenter converges all features into an "intelligent, graphic touch screen," explains Tim McKinney, vice president of residential marketing and sales. It can be installed anywhere the homeowner desires, whether in the kitchen, the entryway, or a closet. Using it is "as simple as an ATM," he says.
In addition to allowing homeowners the control of a number of different home systems, ADT's Safewatch iCenter monitors air quality and other environmental conditions.
McKinney hopes builders will see the iCenter as something to differentiate their homes' from those of competitors. It's X10-driven, using existing wiring with modules that plug into any outlet. It can be accessed on the premises or remotely through the Internet or phone, and with a DSL Internet connection can control the home's connectivity and communications functions. Installation begins at just under $3,000, and monitoring runs $49.99 a month.
